Automated Door Locks, Video Door Bells and Cameras that Talk.
In Arizona, the month of August is also known as “Back to School” month. If your family is anything like ours, you’re probably setting up calendars to coordinate with half-days, no-school days, holidays, sports events, doctor appointments, and more. Last year we had one child in college, one in high school and one in elementary school. The planning had to be calculated and constantly updated to avoid any potential mishaps. But a well oiled machine cannot run perfectly all of the time. Even with our military style accuracy and laser focused planning, we’d inevitably run into this scheduling issues. This year we have one in the work force, one in college and one in elementary school. In an effort to use technology to benefit our family we put together a few ideas for you to consider this school year.
#1 My wife and I agreed that putting the house keys around the neck of the youngest child would not be the best idea for her because she loses her shoes at least three times a day. We tried that with our middle child, $250 and a lengthy locksmith visit later, we decided not to do that again. With a little more thought we went with automated door locks that can be opened with a code or an app on your smartphone. We added a video doorbell which allows us to see when she gets home from our phone. Our youngest likes the idea of hearing our voice through the intercom and my wife likes the ability to see her and to make sure that no one is around when she opens the door.
#2 About two years ago, we installed talking cameras for a dog loving client. My client wanted the ability to verbally correct her dogs to prevent them from destroying the furniture when she was not home. My wife reminded me of this install last week because it would allow us to communicate with our youngest child via camera. Our child has ADHD so she has issues staying dedicate to the task at hand, so being able to communicate with her in this manner and help her stay on task is great! A camera like this may or may not be the best thing for your children, but we think it might help us out this school year. We’ve been loving the Clare Controls Video Doorbell. This system would also work well for grandparents or aging adults in the home. I regret not having the system when my grandfather lived with us. It would have given him peace of mind and allowed him to easily talk with us while avoiding redundancy issues commonly experienced with Alexa, Echo and Google. I love the parody from Saturday Night Live, which convinced us to pay a little more for the live person intercom camera system choice.
